Bengaluru: Officials have been directed to identify alternative routes during construction and plan wider footpaths wherever feasible along Hennur–Bagalur Main Road, as commuters and pedestrians face ongoing roadworks on the stretch from the junction to Geddalahalli.
Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda issued the directions during an inspection on Monday, asking departments to coordinate road, drainage and pedestrian infrastructure rather than treating white-topping as a stand-alone road-laying exercise, according to the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
Alternative routes during Hennur–Bagalur roadworks
The minister asked officials to identify alternative routes and put appropriate traffic arrangements in place for the duration of construction. Departments must work together to prevent bottlenecks around work sites and minimise inconvenience to the public, he said.
The release did not identify specific alternative routes or announce a completion date for the works.
Wider footpaths, repaired slabs and better drainage
Officials were told to assess available road space and prepare a plan to widen footpaths wherever possible. Damaged slabs must be repaired to provide safe, uninterrupted pedestrian movement.
Byre Gowda also called for drains to function efficiently so rainwater could flow freely without waterlogging that affects pedestrians and motorists. Necessary drainage repairs and upgrades must be planned alongside road development.
Junction redesign and land handover
Improvements to congested junctions must reflect local road conditions and traffic volumes, with junction-specific changes to road design and supporting infrastructure, the minister said.
He directed officials to review land requirements and pending acquisition processes, and speed up acquisition and handover so delays did not hold up development works.
White-topping plans must account for any necessary road widening, design improvements, drainage, footpaths and other amenities. Departments were asked to avoid repeated excavation and duplication of work while maintaining construction quality and following the planned execution schedule.
The inspection was attended by KR Puram MLA Byarathi Basavaraj, GBA Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, Bengaluru East City Corporation Commissioner D. S. Ramesh, Additional Commissioner Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar and officials from the departments concerned.
