BENGALURU:

In a strong reaction to Assembly Speaker Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri’s decision to put a gag on the functioning of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), its chairman H K Patil said the committee would meet on June 2 to decide on serving a breach of privilege notice against the Speaker.

Addressing a presser on Saturday, the former minister said it was an “unprecedented situation” where the Speaker was trying to stifle the indepencence of a statutory institution. Referring to a controversial purchase of PPE kits, he said, “There is no freedom to investigate irregularities.”

Responding to minister Ramesh Jarkiholi’s claim that there were no irregularities in the purchase of PPE kits, Patil said, “There were complaints from the public in this regard, We went to inspect the matter as members of the PAC, not as Congress party members.”
