GBA Launches ‘1 Km Challenge’ to Promote Walking, Reduce Traffic and Pollution in Bengaluru
Bengaluru, May 31: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has launched the ‘1 Km Challenge’, urging citizens to walk short distances instead of relying on motorised transport in an effort to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and promote healthier lifestyles.
As part of the campaign, GBA is encouraging residents to reconsider using autos or other vehicles for destinations located within one kilometre of their starting point.
Highlighting the benefits of walking, the authority said many short trips that could easily be covered on foot contribute unnecessarily to traffic congestion, vehicle emissions and reduced physical activity.
Under the challenge, citizens are being encouraged to ask themselves a simple question before booking an auto: “Can I walk this instead?”
According to GBA, a 10-minute walk can help reduce an individual’s carbon footprint, improve physical health, ease pressure on Bengaluru’s roads and contribute to making the city more pedestrian-friendly.
The civic body said small behavioural changes by citizens can collectively have a significant impact on mobility and environmental sustainability in Bengaluru.
The campaign also encourages residents to challenge friends and family members to adopt walking for short-distance travel and support the vision of building a cleaner, healthier and more walkable Bengaluru.
