Follow Covid-appropriate behaviour, Gupta urges citizens

Thorough contact tracing essential, says ex-civic chief Manjunatha Prasad

BENGALURU:

Senior IAS officer, Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta, who has been serving as BBMP’s Administrator since the last seven months, took charge as Chief Commissioner of the civic body on Thursday.

After assuming charge, Gupta told reporters that he had been given the responsibility of Chief Commissioner of BBMP by the state government. He said he would utilise all the resources available in BBMP to solve the problems of Bengaluru city.

‘We are on the job’

He said he had closely studied the problems of the city in the last 6-7 months. The Covid infection was on the rise in the city and there was a need to take appropriate measures to control the spread of the virus. Gupta urged citizens to abide by the mandatory Covid rules and avoid attending meetings/ceremonies, adding, “The government has already restricted the holding of fairs and ceremonies. The policing strategy has already been activated and everyone is active.”

Former Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad, who is Principal Secretary (Revenue) and in charge of state disaster management, said Bengaluru city had reported around 600 Covid-positive cases in December, while the cases had decreased in January and February. With the start of the second wave in Kerala and Maharashtra in March, with many wedding ceremonies, protests and religious activities taking place, positive cases are also on the rise in Bengaluru city, he noted.

Prasad said conducting more Covid tests in the city, isolating positive cases and thorough contact tracing would reduce the number of infections.

‘Fatalities still low’

He noted that more people in the 20-40 age group were getting infected. On the flip side, the death toll remains low and most of the fatalities are people over 60.

Gupta assumed charge from Manjunatha Prasad in the Commissioner’s chamber. Zonal Commissioners D Randeep, Rajendra Cholan, Manoj Jain, Reddy Shankara Babu, Basavaraju, Tulsi Maddineni and Ravindra were among the officials present.
