Bengaluru, September 9: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will move towards creating a GIS-based repair history for public complaints, enabling officials to identify locations and pipelines with recurring problems and use historical data to plan permanent technical solutions, Board Chairperson Dr. N. Manjula said.

During an inspection of works and water-supply systems across the BWSSB’s north zone, Manjula directed officials to develop a system under which every repair carried out in response to a public complaint is recorded in the Board’s GIS platform.

The move is aimed at shifting complaint redressal beyond temporary repairs. Manjula said recurring problems should be traced to their root cause and addressed through permanent solutions wherever necessary.

The BWSSB receives different types of complaints every day, and in several instances problems recur at the same location or on the same pipeline. Recording each repair in GIS would create historical data showing what kind of problem repeatedly occurs in a particular area and which pipelines require frequent repairs.

“Merely carrying out a repair when a complaint is received is not enough. We must analyse, based on data, why the same problem keeps recurring and, if necessary, replace the pipeline or implement a permanent technical solution. A GIS-based repair history will help in this,” Manjula said.

As part of the inspection, she visited handloom centres at Kamakshamma Layout in Chowdeshwari ward, Yelahanka. She told handloom owners that Cauvery water supplied by the BWSSB was cleaner and more reliable than borewell water and urged them, wherever possible, to obtain Cauvery water connections for domestic use.

After inspecting ongoing pipeline work at Kattigenahalli, Manjula visited the site of the sewage treatment plant being constructed at Kogilu Lake. She directed officials and the contractor to complete the STP within the stipulated timeframe and said there should be no compromise on worker safety at the construction site.

Manjula also visited a tent school set up for children of workers engaged in the STP project and interacted with the children. She instructed officials to ensure that they receive quality food and necessary basic facilities.

During an inspection of works at the Yelahanka divisional office premises, the BWSSB Chairperson directed officials to clean water tanks at prescribed intervals, stressing that proper tank maintenance was important for maintaining drinking-water quality.

At the BWSSB divisional office in Yelahanka New Town, Executive Engineer Mirza Anwar briefed Manjula on the progress of various works. She subsequently inspected the Singapura service station, Yelahanka New Town, Kamakshamma Layout, Kattigenahalli and Kogilu Lake areas.

Chief Engineer B.C. Gangadhar, Executive Engineer Mirza Anwar and other BWSSB officials were present during the inspections.
