Bengaluru: BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraj has been granted bail by a Special Court for People’s Representatives in connection with the Biklu Shiva murder case, providing temporary relief to the legislator who was earlier taken into custody by police.
The court granted conditional bail, directing the MLA to execute a bond of ₹2 lakh along with two sureties as part of the bail conditions.
The court also imposed strict restrictions, including a direction that the accused must not tamper with evidence or influence witnesses connected to the case. Additionally, the court stated that Byrathi Basavaraj cannot leave the jurisdiction without prior permission from the court.
Basavaraj had been absconding for nearly seven months in connection with the murder case before he was taken into police custody on February 13. Following his arrest, police conducted an extensive interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigators had earlier indicated that the accused had not fully cooperated during questioning, which led to repeated rounds of interrogation before he was eventually sent to judicial custody in jail.
Subsequently, a bail petition was filed before the court, which has now granted relief with conditions attached.
The case relates to the murder of Biklu Shiva, which had triggered significant political and law-and-order attention in Bengaluru, with police continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crime.
