Guruswamy was first and only party MLA from Chamarajanagar

CHAMARAJANAGAR:

BJP leader C Guruswamy, a former MLA from Chamarajanagar, succumbed to the coronavirus on Wednesday. Guruswamy, 68, was admitted to a private hospital on August 5 and died on Wednesday around 7 am.

An advocate by profession, he is the only BJP representative so far to have won the Chamarajanagar assembly seat.

He started his political career with the Janata Party and the Janata Dal. He was a member of the Mysore District Zilla Parishad when the Janata Dal was in existence.

Guruswamy was a close aide of former Union Minister Rajasekhara Murthy, and followed Rajasekhara into the BJP.

In 1999, he won as a BJP candidate from the Chamarajanagar constituency, defeating two-time winner Vatal Nagaraj. He left the BJP in 1999-2004 and joined the Congress, where he became the district unit chief. Later, he rejoined the BJP.

Guruswamy is survived by his wife Sheila and two daughters, including former district BJP general secretary Nagashree Pratap.
