Bengaluru, July 20: Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Monday announced that the month-long ‘Bengaluru Hasirooru’ green campaign will be held from August 15 to September 15, with a target of planting 64,000 saplings and distributing 40,000 saplings to citizens across the city.

Chairing a review meeting of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Forest Division, the Minister said tree plantation should not remain a mere paper exercise and directed officials to ensure that every sapling planted is nurtured and protected. He instructed officials to complete all preparations for the campaign and ensure only high-quality six-foot-tall saplings are planted.

The plantation drive will be implemented through the Public-Private Planting Programme (PPPP), with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), civic organisations and citizens encouraged to participate. Priority will be given to residential layouts, after which plantations will be taken up along roads, around lakes, in parks and other public spaces.

The Minister said species including Mahogany, Tabebuia Rosea, Honge, Neem and Jamun will be planted. He added that a geo-tagged tracking system will be introduced for every sapling, enabling citizens to monitor plantations through the Corporation’s website.

The government has allocated ₹9.64 crore for plantation and maintenance of the saplings for three years across the five City Corporations. Payments will be linked to successful planting and maintenance.

Residents, RWAs and citizens with space to plant at least 30 saplings can apply online through the Corporation’s website or by email until August 10. Based on inspections by Forest Department officials, eligible locations will be taken up for plantation.

The Minister also directed that before any tree is felled for development works by the Corporation, Metro or any other government department, the executing agency must bear the cost of planting ten saplings for every tree removed. Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao and senior officials attended the meeting.
