Bengaluru: The Bengaluru South City Corporation has closed and sealed 51 commercial establishments that were operating without authorisation in residential areas, its health officials said on November 7. The drive was carried out under the directions of Commissioner K.N. Ramesh.
Raids were conducted simultaneously across five Assembly constituencies in the corporation’s limits. Bommanahalli accounted for the highest number, with 22 establishments sealed, followed by Jayanagar with 11, Bengaluru South with nine, Padmanabhanagar with six and BTM Layout with three.
In Bommanahalli zone, a team of health officers and Arakere health supervisors led by Joint Commissioner Satish Babu acted against businesses running illegally in the residential areas of Arakere ward.
Among the establishments sealed on the spot were a catering centre that was operating commercially with about 23 domestic cylinders stored without authorisation, condiment shops that caused public nuisance and allowed smoking around them, a fabrication (engineering) unit and a car wash centre.
The corporation said the action was taken to protect the peace, hygiene and safety of residents. The Commissioner warned that unauthorised commercial activity will not be allowed in residential layouts and that strict legal action will continue against violators without leniency.
The corporation had earlier sealed 63 illegal shops in residential areas.
