Bengaluru, July 7: In a significant initiative to integrate academic expertise with civic administration, the Bengaluru South City Corporation and the Rashtriya Shikshana Samithi Trust (RSST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate student internships focused on solving real-world urban challenges through technology, research and innovation.

The MoU was signed at the RSST office by Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh and RSST Secretary Dr. A.V.S. Murthy.

AI and Technology to Support Civic Administration

As part of the internship programme, students from RV Educational Institutions will undertake research projects aimed at identifying practical solutions to various civic issues. The initiative will focus on the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital technologies and modern analytical tools to improve municipal governance and service delivery.

Students will conduct detailed studies and submit recommendations that can assist the corporation in addressing administrative and urban infrastructure challenges.

Five Expert Sub-Committees Constituted

Commissioner K.N. Ramesh said the corporation has already constituted a committee of domain experts to provide strategic inputs on the effective utilisation of municipal resources. Five subject-specific sub-committees have been formed, one of which is dedicated to student internships.

The collaboration with RSST has been initiated under the recommendations of this internship sub-committee.

Focus Areas for Student Research

The internship programme will cover several key areas of urban governance, including:

  • Traffic management
  • Smart parking solutions
  • Improvement of public spaces
  • Municipal asset management
  • Educational development
  • Solid waste management
  • Public awareness initiatives
  • Junction development
  • Underground drainage systems
  • Urban civic infrastructure

Students will prepare reports based on field surveys, research studies and citizen feedback, providing evidence-based recommendations for improving public services.

Bridging Academia and Governance

The Commissioner said young minds can bring innovative ideas and technological solutions to the challenges faced by urban local bodies. With faculty members and students from multiple disciplines available at RV Educational Institutions, the partnership is expected to generate practical, research-backed recommendations for better governance.

He also invited interested faculty members and subject experts from RSST to become part of the corporation’s expert advisory committees already working in various sectors.

Citizen-Centric Governance

The corporation said public participation and academic collaboration are essential pillars of transparent and efficient governance. Universities and research institutions possess valuable studies and technical expertise that can help governments formulate evidence-based policies.

The internship programme is intended to expose students to real-time civic challenges, enabling them to study, analyse and propose solutions under the guidance of their professors while contributing meaningfully to Bengaluru’s urban development.

The event was attended by Chief Engineer Basavaraj Kabade, RSST Joint Secretary D.P. Nagaraj, Registrar Syed Shahmeer, subject experts Ashwin Mahesh, Prasanna Rao, Padmashree Balaram, Parthasarathi, and other senior officials.

Officials described the initiative as a new model of collaboration between government and academia that is expected to benefit both institutions while promoting innovation, technology-driven governance and improved civic services in Bengaluru.
