Bengaluru Records 24.2 mm Rain, GKVK Gets 46.5 mm; More Thundershowers Likely Over Next 48 Hours
Bengaluru: Bengaluru received a fresh spell of rain and thunderstorm activity overnight, with the city observatory recording 24.2 mm of rainfall while GKVK Bengaluru received a substantially higher 46.5 mm, according to observations from the Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru.
The rainfall was recorded during the period beginning at 8.30 am on September 21, with the initial station observations covering rainfall up to 5.30 am on September 22.
Bengaluru City recorded 24.2 mm of rainfall accompanied by cumulonimbus cloud activity, while Bengaluru HAL Airport received 6.7 mm. The observation at Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) was 0.2 mm during the corresponding early-morning reporting period.
Data from the Automatic Weather Station/Automatic Rain Gauge network showed considerable variation within the Bengaluru region.
GKVK Bengaluru recorded 46.5 mm, while the Bengaluru station listed in the AWS/ARG observations received 25 mm. Bengaluru AWS recorded another 17 mm, while Doddaballapur received 10.6 mm.
The figures underline the localised nature of the rain, with some parts of the Bengaluru region receiving significantly heavier spells than others.
Bengaluru City Records 24.2 mm in 24 Hours
The subsequent observation data for the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on September 22 showed Bengaluru City with 24.2 mm rainfall.
The city recorded a maximum temperature of 31°C and a minimum of 20.6°C, while relative humidity stood at 91%.
Bengaluru HAL Airport recorded 6.7 mm rain, with a maximum temperature of 30.7°C and minimum of 19.5°C. Relative humidity was 85%.
At Bengaluru International Airport, the 24-hour rainfall total ending at 8.30 am was 1.8 mm. The airport recorded a maximum temperature of 30.3°C, a minimum of 20.2°C and relative humidity of 88%.
The difference between the KIAL early observation of 0.2 mm and the 24-hour total of 1.8 mm reflects the different observation periods provided in the weather data.
More Rain Likely in Bengaluru
Rain is expected to continue over Bengaluru.
In its local forecast issued at 9 am on September 22, the Meteorological Centre forecast a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain or thundershowers very likely over Bengaluru city and neighbourhood during the next 24 hours.
The maximum temperature is likely to be around 30°C and the minimum around 20°C.
Similar conditions are forecast for the subsequent 48-hour period, with a generally cloudy sky and light to moderate rain or thundershowers very likely. Temperatures are again expected to remain around 30°C maximum and 20°C minimum.
Heavy Rain at KVK TukKanatti
Elsewhere in Karnataka, the highest rainfall among the supplied AWS/ARG observations was 76.5 mm at KVK TukKanatti in Belagavi district.
Hagari in Ballari recorded 36 mm, Agumbe 20 mm, Gangavathi 8.5 mm and KVK Hulkoti 8 mm.
Other observations included 7.5 mm at KVK Naganahalli, 6 mm at Kalaburagi, 5 mm at CCRI Balehonnur, 4 mm at Chikkaballapur and 3 mm each at KVK Raddewadgi, another Raddewadgi station listing, Chikkanahalli and Chandurayangahalli KVK.
Koppal recorded 1.5 mm, Mangaluru 1 mm, while KVK Mangaluru, RARS Vijayapura, Gonikoppal KVK, Tidagundi and ZARS Hiriyur recorded 0.5 mm each.
Thunderstorm Activity Across North Interior Karnataka
Regular station observations also showed notable thunderstorm-associated rainfall across parts of North Interior Karnataka.
Kalaburagi recorded 24.2 mm with thunderstorm and rain, while Gadag received 16.6 mm with thunderstorm and rain. Belagavi Airport recorded 4.2 mm with thunderstorm and rain, while Vijayapura received 0.4 mm.
Raichur reported dry thunder and lightning.
In Coastal Karnataka, Mangaluru Airport recorded 2.5 mm and Shakthinagar 0.9 mm.
The latest observations therefore show uneven but significant thunderstorm and rainfall activity across Karnataka, with Bengaluru among the locations recording notable overnight rain and further light to moderate rain or thundershowers forecast over the city during the next 48 hours.
