Following Monday night’s close shave for more than a thousand passengers when the locomotive of the Mayiladuthurai Express collided with a truck that had trespassed onto the railway track, the Government Railway Police (GRP) on Tuesday arrested the truck driver who had fled the scene of the accident near Hebbagodi in Bengaluru.

Around 8.30 pm on Monday, the heavy goods vehicle (KA02AE9110) had illegally crossed the railway track between Carmelaram and Heelalige railway stations.

A major accident was averted after the loco pilot of train 06232 (Mysuru-Mayiladuthurai Express) noticed the vehicle and applied the emergency brakes. Despite his prompt action, the locomotive collided with the truck, but fortunately there were no injuries or casualties among the 1,380 passengers aboard the train.

According to the Byappanahalli railway police, the truck driver was supposed to move through a railway under bridge (RUB), but found it flooded with rain water. He then took a diversion and tried to cross the railway track at a closed crossing but the vehicle stalled on the track, leading to the near-fatal accident.

The police said they had identified the truck owner on the basis of its registration number. Based on the information provided by the vehicle owner, the police traced and arrested the truant driver on Tuesday evening, within 24 hours of the mishap.
