Bengaluru: Bengaluru North City Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar on Saturday morning inspected the implementation of the waste management Micro Plan and sanitation activities in 1st Block, B.E.L. Layout, Ward No. 9, Vidyaranyapura, and later launched ‘Ward One’ campaign activities in Ward No. 10.
During the inspection, he reviewed the progress of street sweeping and door-to-door garbage collection, and obtained details of the garbage collection autos, drivers, helpers and scheduled sanitation timings. He walked through various roads in 1st Block and heard residents’ grievances on civic issues and sanitation.
The Commissioner said the movement of garbage collection vehicles was difficult in some localities because of narrow roads. Under a policy formulated at the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) level, vehicles are stationed near the entrances of narrow streets and residents are asked to bring their waste to these points. The Corporation is also exploring alternative arrangements; until then, residents have been asked to walk a short distance and hand over their waste, he said.
Whether people were born and brought up in Bengaluru or had moved to the city for work and other reasons, keeping the city clean was everyone’s responsibility, he said, urging citizens to cooperate with the Corporation.
Details of the Micro Plan, including the pourakarmikas, drivers, helpers and vehicles assigned to each road and the garbage collection timings, are being shared with the public on social media, and citizens can contact the staff responsible for their area if they face any problem, the Commissioner said. He stressed accountability among sanitation staff at the ground level and urged citizens to segregate wet and dry waste.
As waste generation rises significantly during festivals, officials and staff have been told to work in coordination, deploy adequate personnel and ensure proper disposal. Plans are also being considered to collect garbage twice a day in some localities, he said.
At Ward No. 10, the Commissioner said the ‘Ward One’ campaign is being implemented in seven wards in the Corporation’s limits. As directed by Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, the target is to clean all wards by the end of November, but the campaign may continue until December because of challenges in mobilising resources and deploying personnel from various departments, he said.
In the coming weeks, two wards from each Assembly constituency are proposed to be taken up for comprehensive sanitation work, with officials of various departments working in the field under the Executive Engineers to resolve as many civic issues as possible on the same day. Progress is being documented through a 30-point checklist and reported to the Minister’s office, he said.
Executive Engineer Nagappa, DGM Rashmi, AGM Theerthaprasad, representatives of Residents’ Welfare Associations, members of the public and Corporation officials were present.
