Bengaluru, August 31: Food safety officials inspected 16 sweet manufacturing units and seized food products valued at approximately ₹5.99 lakh during a special enforcement drive covering Bengaluru and several other parts of Karnataka, with expired, improperly labelled and misbranded products among the items detected.

The Food Safety Division of the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration conducted the drive on August 31, 2026, on the directions of Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader.

Inspections were carried out across Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Greater Bengaluru Authority areas, Mysuru City Corporation, Dakshina Kannada, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation areas.

According to the department, the drive was undertaken to ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene and quality standards and safeguard public health. Action was initiated against establishments where violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the rules and regulations framed under it were identified.

Officials inspected 16 sweet manufacturing units and collected samples of a range of food products for laboratory analysis. The samples included sweets, cooking oil, fresh oil, curd, pulses, chickpeas or chana, jalebi, khova and tea powder, among other items.

The collected samples have been sent to authorised laboratories to assess their quality and safety and determine whether they comply with prescribed food safety standards.

During the inspections, officials seized five litres of expired Nandini curd. They also seized 13 large packets and six small packets of chocolate decoration products over improper labelling.

The enforcement action further included the seizure of 10 kg of chocolate flavour and five kg of rasgulla.

Around 60 kg of various food products, including banana chips and chakli masala, were found to be misbranded, according to the department. These products did not carry mandatory labelling information, including the manufacturer’s name and address and the FSSAI licence number, and were seized for violation of prescribed labelling requirements.

Officials also seized 367 kg of ready-to-eat savouries, four kg of cocoa powder, 4.5 kg of cracked cocoa beans, six kg of khova and 196 kg of fennel powder during the inspection drive.

The department put the total value of food products seized during the special drive at approximately ₹5.99 lakh.

The Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration said further legal action would be initiated against the establishments concerned in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the rules and regulations framed under it.

The department said ensuring safe, hygienic and quality food for consumers remained a priority and that enforcement action would continue against establishments found violating food safety standards.
