Bengaluru: In a major push to strengthen lake management and infrastructure development, Bengaluru East City Corporation Commissioner D. S. Ramesh directed officials to coordinate with the Bangalore Development Authority for the handover of Varthur Lake to the City Corporation, and to accelerate pending rejuvenation works at Bellandur Lake.

The Commissioner conducted a joint inspection of Bellandur and Varthur lakes, along with engineers from the City Corporation, BDA, BWSSB, and officials from the Solid Waste Management Department. The inspection focused on lake rejuvenation progress, prevention of sewage inflow, and inter-departmental coordination.

Bellandur Lake, currently maintained by the BDA, was inspected with specific focus on desilting works. The Commissioner instructed officials to complete removal of the entire silt on priority before the onset of the monsoon. Boundary walls, compound walls, and lake inlets and outlets were inspected, and officials were directed to initiate action against identified encroachments and ensure proper maintenance. Priority rejuvenation and development works were ordered to be completed at the earliest.

Varthur Lake

Officials informed that rejuvenation works at Varthur Lake have been completed. The Commissioner inspected the lake bund, inlets, boundary fencing, and sluice gates, and directed officials to ensure effective upkeep. Observing heavy weed growth across the lake surface, he ordered immediate measures for weed removal. BWSSB officials briefed the team on the inflow of treated water from sewage treatment plants. City Corporation officials were instructed to coordinate with the BDA and submit a detailed report within one week on the handover of Varthur Lake to the City Corporation.

Road Widening & Land Acquisition Review

Separately, the Additional Commissioner (Development) of the Bengaluru East City Corporation, Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar, chaired a progress review meeting on land acquisition and road widening projects within the Corporation limits.

Bagmane Tech Park Road (Goshala Road)

As per the Revised Master Plan-2015, a 24-metre-wide road is proposed from the Outer Ring Road through Seetharampalya to Sathya Sai Hospital. In the first phase, officials were instructed to issue land acquisition notifications for a 2.2-km stretch up to Seetharampalya Lake and to take steps to open Bagmane Tech Park Road fully for public traffic.

Swami Vivekananda Road

Officials were directed to take possession of already relinquished land, install City Corporation name boards, and conduct eviction drives to clear encroachments along Swami Vivekananda Road.

Old Airport Road – Siddapura–Nallurahalli Road

This road, earmarked as 18 metres wide under the Revised Master Plan-2015, will undergo widening. Officials were instructed to expedite land acquisition along a 1.5-km stretch.

Senior engineers from the City Corporation, BDA, BWSSB, the Solid Waste Management Department, and consultants attended the inspection and review meetings.
