BBMP to tighten festival-time Covid vigil on markets

Civic chief Gaurav Gupta instructs officials, marshals to enforce Covid-appropriate behaviour in major Bengaluru markets

BENGALURU:

With August and September set to see public crowding during festivals like Muharrum, Varamahalakshmi Vrata, Srikrishna Janmashtami, Ganesha Chaturthi and Durga Puja, BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta has instructed zonal joint commissioners, health officers and chief marshals to strictly enforce Covid-preventive protocols in the city, especially in the major markets.

According to the BBMP order, the following measures are to be taken in markets:

• BBMP health officers must raise awareness regarding Covid-preventive measures issued by the BBMP headquarters amongst the public and vendors on the previous day and on the day of the festival via loudspeakers.

• Awareness regarding Covid-preventive measures must be promoted via patrol vehicles deployed by marshals at the 8 zonal levels.

• A fine of Rs 250 per person will be imposed on the public and merchants not wearing masks at major market areas in BBMP limits.

• Marshals and senior and junior health inspectors must ensure social distance is maintained in all markets in BBMP limits.

• Shop, restaurant and mall owners must ensure that they and their staff have been administered at least the first dose of a vaccine.

• Shop, restaurant and mall owners must ensure that the staff and public wear masks and maintain social distance.

• Marshals, senior and junior health inspectors must pay surprise visits to shops, restaurants, market areas and malls to ensure Covid-19 preventive measures are followed.

• Ensure that commercial outlets are shut during curfew hours. If any individual/organisation is found flouting Covid-19 preventive measures, they must be penalised and strict measures must be taken against them under the Disaster Management Act 2005.
