Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Employees’ Cooperative Society Ltd. celebrated its 112th Foundation Day and Talent Felicitation Ceremony at Puttanna Chetty Town Hall, Bengaluru, marking over a century of service to civic employees.

On the occasion, the prestigious Salumarada Thimmakka Award was conferred upon outstanding officers and employees from BBMP and Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) civic bodies for their dedication and public service.

The event was inaugurated by senior actors Lakshmi and Vinaya Prasad, along with Assistant Commissioner Girish, State Government Employees’ Association President C.S. Shadakshari, Cooperative Society President A. Amrit Raj, and Vice-President K.G. Ravi, who lit the ceremonial lamp.

Addressing the gathering, veteran actor Lakshmi delivered a strong civic message, urging citizens not to litter public spaces. “People casually throw garbage and expect someone else to clean it. If those who litter are made to pick up waste themselves, they will understand the hardship sanitation workers face every day,” she said, calling for respect and empathy toward civic workers. She also stressed the importance of stress-free living, healthy food, mental well-being, and gratitude toward nature.

Assistant Commissioner Girish said the cooperative society has stood by employees during times of distress and described its completion of 112 years as a remarkable milestone. He noted that encouraging talented children of BBMP officers and staff would help shape responsible citizens and future leaders.

Society President A. Amrit Raj highlighted the cooperative’s century-long legacy built on mutual support and welfare of civic employees. He announced that the Salumarada Thimmakka Award was being instituted for the first time in Karnataka in honour of the renowned environmentalist.

Speaking at the event, C.S. Shadakshari said the cooperative movement has played a crucial role in providing financial security to government employees and assured continued support in addressing staff issues, recalling the role of civic employees’ cooperation during the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission.

Actor Vinaya Prasad emphasised the importance of encouragement in education, arts, and culture, stating that timely support helps young talent grow into assets for the state and the nation.

The Salumarada Thimmakka Awards were presented to several distinguished officers and staff, including Chief Health Officer Dr Nirmala Buggi, Health Officer Dr A.S. Balasundar, Joint Commissioner (Revenue) Lakshmidevi R, Chief Engineer Basavaraj S. Kabade, Deputy Legal Adviser Muniraju M, Assistant Executive Engineer H.K. Tippesh, Assistant Revenue Officer N.
