Civic agency has set up special centre with target to vaccinate 33,000 BBMP employees and 27,000 police personnel
BENGALURU:
After a short break, civic agency BBMP kickstarted the second phase of the Covid-19 vaccination drive on Tuesday. BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad and Administrator Gaurav Gupta were the first to take the ‘jab’ to allay any apprehensions among frontline workers who are still hesitating to take the vaccination.
On Monday, BBMP vaccinated around 1,000 poura karmikas. On Tuesday, all the IAS officers posted as BBMP’s Special Commissioners took the ‘jab’.
The civic agency has set up an exclusive vaccination centre at the Rajkumar Glass House in the premises of the BBMP head office. The Commissioner said the target is to vaccinate around 33,000 BBMP employees and around 27,000 working police officials at the centre set up at the Glass House.
‘Why everyone needs the jab’
The Commissioner opined that if Bengaluru has to be free from the coronavirus, everyone needs to be vaccinated. “In July 2019 when I took over as BBMP Commissioner, the city was reporting around 6,000 positive cases each day. Today, on Monday, we have reported only 73 positive cases in the BBMP limits,” he pointed out.
“The positive rate has come down to 0.73% despite our conducting around 20,000 tests on a regular basis. To become a virus-free city, around 70% antibodies need to be developed in people’s bodies after taking the vaccination. Hence, everyone needs to take the vaccine to stay away from virus,” Prasad said.
