Alarm bells for Bengaluru: Covid positivity rate crosses 10% with 7,113 new cases

Karnataka logs 5.42% Covid positivity rate as the state reports 8,906 fresh cases

BENGALURU:

Karnataka’s capital and India’s Silicon City on Saturday crossed the 10% Covid test positivity rate by reporting 7,113 positive cases, while the state as a whole reported 8,906 cases with a 5.42% TPR.

Dr K Sudhakar, Karnataka’s Health Minister, tweeted: “Test positivity rate crosses 10 % in Bengaluru with the city recording 7,113 cases today. Bengaluru continues to be the epicentre of Covid in Karnataka with 79% of cases.”

The state’s tally on Saturday was 8,906 fresh Covid-19 cases and four deaths, taking the cumulative infections and fatalities since the start of the pandemic to 30,39,958 and 38,366 respectively, the state Health Department said.

Active cases 38,507

In its bulletin, the Health Department said 508 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 29,63,056. Active cases in the state now stand at 38,507.

Cases increase marginally in Karnataka today:
◾New cases in State:8,906
◾New cases in B'lore: 7,113
◾Positivity rate in State: 5.42%
◾Discharges: 508

The spike in cases was driven by Bengaluru Urban, which contributed 7,113 infections and three deaths. Other districts too had fresh cases, including 295 in Dakshina Kannada, 203 in Mysuru, 186 in Udupi, 183 in Mandya, 139 in Hassan and 111 in Bengaluru Rural.

Kalaburagi recorded one death. There were zero fatalities in 29 districts, whereas Haveri and Yadgir reported zero infections and zero fatalities.

Fatalities still low

According to the Health Department, the positivity rate for Saturday was 5.42% and the case fatality rate was 0.04%.

A total of 1,64,261 samples were tested in the state on Saturday, including 1,35,291 RT-PCR tests, taking the cumulative number of specimens examined so far to 5.75 crore.

There were 1,65,880 inoculations done on Saturday, taking the total vaccinations so far to 8.95 crore statewide, the department said.
