BENGALURU:

Dr. KV Trilok Chandra, the Special Commissioner for the BBMP’s Health and Animal Husbandry Department, released a study that included a survey of the city of Bengaluru’s street dog population. He reported that 2,79,335 stray canines in all had been discovered within the corporation’s 8 zones.

The NAPRE-recommended Sight-Resight method was used to conduct a survey of stray dogs from July 11, 2023, to August 2, 2023 in order to gather factual data about the effectiveness of the sterilization program and anti-rabies vaccination program in the eight BBMP zones and to create appropriate plans for the threat of stray dogs and their control.

The Principal Scientist (BIOSTATISTICS) of ICAR-NIVEDI, WVS (Mission Rabies), undertook a survey of stray dogs. With the help of 50 teams (totaling 100 surveyors and 15 supervisors), the BBMP animal husbandry department officials, the animal husbandry and veterinary department, and KP Suresh Institute, the survey of stray dogs was conducted over the course of 12 days.

The four BBMP sections—residential area, sewage area, business area, and lakes—have been divided into 6850 microzones, each with a 0.5 sq km area; 1360 of these microzones, or 20% of the total, was randomly chosen for the survey. A systematic survey of stray dogs was carried out in conjunction with 50 ward-based teams from 07/11/2023 to 02/08/2023.

In the current survey, a total of 279335 stray canines were discovered in 8 zones. According to the 2019 Stray Dog Survey, there are an estimated 3.10 lakh stray canines, and 51.16 percent of them have undergone sterilization. According to the current survey, 71.85% of stray dogs have undergone sterilization, and overall, there will be a 20 percent increase in the number of stray dogs while a decline in the number of stray dogs. The number of stray dogs within the authority of the BBMP is less than 10%, according to the most recent line survey data.

As the spay/neuter surgery program is successfully implemented and carefully managed in the organization, the number of stray dogs will decrease. The firm will use the results of the aforementioned stray dog survey to assist create plans and policies that will effectively address stray dog control and related issues in 08 zones/wards in the near future.

The Joint Director of the Animal Husbandry Department Ravikumar, Dr. Baladev Raj Gulati, Principal Scientist (BIOSTATISTICS) of ICAR-NIVEDI Dr. KP Suresh, and others were present.
