BENGALURU:

One of 5 blasts

As per the investigation, the bomb blast in the Mysuru court was one in a series of five bomb blasts committed by members of Base Movement, an organization owing allegiance to al-Qaeda, a proscribed terrorist organization. They had also executed the bomb blasts at the Chittor court in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, on April 7, 2016, at the Kollam court in Kerala on May 15, 2016, at the Nellore court, Andhra Pradesh, on September 12, 2016 and at the Mallapuram court in Kerala on November 1, 2016.

The three accused had formed Base Movement in Tamil Nadu in January 2015, inspired by the ideology of al-Qaeda and its (eliminated) leader Osama bin Laden. They had recruited other accused persons and hatched a criminal conspiracy to threaten government departments, especially courts, holding them ‘responsible’ for ‘atrocities’ and ‘injustice’ meted out to a particular religious group. In pursuance of the conspiracy, they had systematically issued threats to prison authorities and police officials of different states and to the French Embassy in India.

The NIA filed a chargesheet against the three accused on May 24, 2017 and the trial in the case was concluded on September 29, 2021. Consequently, the NIA court in Bengaluru convicted them under various sections of the IPC, UA(P)A, Explosives Substances Act, and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act

The quantum of punishment against the convicted accused will be pronounced on Monday, October 11, 2021.
