Monsoon Advances Across Karnataka; IMD Issues Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain Alert for Coastal and Malnad Regions
Bengaluru, June 8: The Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into Karnataka, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of the state over the next week.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru, conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the monsoon across Karnataka during the next two to three days.
Red Alert-Like Situation Along Coast
The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts on June 8 and June 9, accompanied by sustained winds of 30-40 kmph.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the coastal districts through June 14, raising concerns over flooding, waterlogging, landslides and disruption of normal life.
Malnad Districts Brace for Intense Rain
The Malnad districts of Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall on June 9, while heavy to very heavy rain is forecast from June 8 onwards.
Kodagu and Hassan districts are also expected to witness heavy rainfall during the week.
Authorities have been advised to remain alert in landslide-prone and low-lying areas.
Heavy Rain Warning for North Karnataka
Several districts in North Karnataka, including Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Raichur, Koppal and Yadgir, are expected to receive heavy rain and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph.
The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms in parts of North Interior Karnataka on June 8 and 9.
Bengaluru to Witness Wet Week
For Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts, the weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by winds of 30-40 kmph over the next several days.
The city is expected to remain generally cloudy, with daytime temperatures hovering around 29°C and minimum temperatures around 21°C.
Temperatures Drop Across State
The IMD noted that maximum temperatures remained below normal in many parts of Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka during the past 24 hours.
No significant rise in temperatures is expected over the next five days as monsoon activity strengthens across the state.
Monsoon Expands Across India
The weather department said the Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Favourable atmospheric conditions indicate that the monsoon is likely to cover more parts of Karnataka and adjoining regions over the coming days.
Residents in coastal, Malnad and flood-prone areas have been advised to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as heavy rainfall activity intensifies across the state.
