Mysuru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday challenged opposition leaders, including HD Kumaraswamy, Shobha Karandlaje, and R Ashoka, to extend support for the implementation of the Mekedatu project if they are truly committed to the state’s development.

Speaking at a programme in Periyapatna, where development works worth â‚č419.78 crore across multiple departments were inaugurated and launched, Shivakumar said the project should be executed within the legal framework and in accordance with Supreme Court directions.

He accused the opposition of indulging in misinformation and criticism without constructive intent. “Spreading lies, criticism, and misleading the public has become the sole agenda of the opposition,” he said, adding that BJP-ruled states are now replicating Congress’s guarantee schemes.

Shivakumar claimed that while the BJP has attempted to copy these schemes, it has failed to implement all five guarantees successfully, managing only a few. He asserted that Karnataka’s guarantee programmes have become a model for the entire country and questioned whether previous BJP governments had introduced comparable welfare initiatives.

Highlighting irrigation and farmer welfare, he said the state government is working in the interest of farmers in the Cauvery basin and is providing compensation of up to â‚č35 lakh to those affected by the Almatti dam height increase. He alleged that the Centre has not extended support to key projects, including the Bhadra Upper Canal project, despite assurances.

Government Committed to Periyapatna Development

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the development of Periyapatna, Shivakumar said several initiatives are being undertaken, including the construction of Kuvempu Bhavan with support from the Vokkaligara Sangha. He announced a grant of â‚č1 crore for the project and appreciated local leadership for contributing land worth â‚č2 crore for public welfare.

He said Periyapatna’s growth is a long-standing vision being realised through multiple development projects and assured continued support from the state government.

Focus on Infrastructure and Roads

The Deputy CM highlighted ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, particularly road development across the state. He said quality roads are being constructed under the leadership of the Public Works Department, ensuring better connectivity.

He also noted initiatives such as providing free electricity to farmers’ pump sets and promoting solar-powered solutions. Solar power units with a combined capacity of 63 MW have been established in the taluk to ensure daytime electricity supply to farmers.

Shivakumar reiterated that despite criticism from the opposition, the Congress government has successfully implemented its guarantee schemes and continues to deliver on its promises.
