‘Negligence Won’t Be Tolerated’: Bengaluru North Commissioner Cracks Down on Sanitation Lapses
Bengaluru: In a stern message to civic staff, Bengaluru North City Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar expressed strong displeasure over lapses in sanitation management during a surprise field inspection in the Sarvagnanagar division, warning officials that negligence will not be tolerated.
The Commissioner conducted an early morning inspection to review on-ground sanitation work and found glaring gaps in monitoring and execution. He pulled up officials after observing that pourakarmikas, supervisors, and Junior Health Inspectors (JHIs) were not performing their duties effectively, leading to persistent cleanliness issues.
Attendance, Salary Cuts Under Scrutiny
Taking serious note of irregular attendance, the Commissioner directed officials to submit detailed records of absentee staff and those on long-term leave. He also sought clarity on whether salary deductions were being enforced as per rules.
‘Lack of Monitoring Root Cause’
Calling out weak supervision as a major concern, he ordered officials to submit daily data on solid waste management, including waste segregation levels, penalties imposed, and progress in clearing garbage black spots.
Tight Deadlines, Ward-Wise Accountability
Officials have been given two days to furnish ward-wise and division-wise workforce deployment details, including gang work allocation. The Commissioner stressed continuous performance tracking of every pourakarmika and directed JHIs to intensify supervision.
He also demanded performance reports of sanitation supervisors and detailed updates on awareness drives conducted in commercial areas through link workers.
Crackdown on Illegal Dumping
In a bid to curb unauthorized waste disposal, officials have been asked to submit reports on the functioning of marshals during night and early morning shifts, along with details of penalties imposed.
Garbage Vehicles Delay Flagged
The Commissioner flagged delays in garbage collection vehicles at ward levels and ordered immediate corrective measures to ensure timely waste clearance.
Safety Gear Mandatory
Strict instructions were issued for mandatory use of safety gear by sanitation workers and auto drivers involved in waste collection.
Black Spots in Focus
During inspection in Pulikeshinagar, several garbage black spots were identified. The Commissioner directed immediate clearance and called for stronger mechanisms to prevent recurrence.
Clear Warning Issued
Issuing a final warning, Pommala Sunil Kumar said that poor performance in maintaining city cleanliness and waste management will invite strict action, urging all staff to discharge their duties with accountability.
Senior officials, including Deputy General Manager Rashmi, AGMs, sanitation supervisors, and pourakarmikas, were present during the inspection.
