Bengaluru: The Karnataka Transport Department has issued a fresh set of guidelines for vehicles operating under the All India Tourist Permit (AITP), in line with directives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The new rules have come into effect from April 1, 2026, aiming to enhance safety, monitoring, and operational efficiency of tourist vehicles.

According to Transport Commissioner Yogeesha, the revised framework introduces several key measures that vehicle owners and operators must comply with.

Under the new provisions, all AITP vehicles must adhere to specific operational standards. Drivers are required to follow regulated duty hours, ensuring adequate rest periods. Vehicles must not exceed prescribed passenger limits — typically 90 passengers for larger buses and 60 for smaller vehicles — as per safety norms. Additionally, all vehicles must be equipped with GPS tracking systems to enable real-time monitoring.

To strengthen surveillance, the department has mandated integration of AITP vehicles with a centralized Command and Control Centre. This system will allow authorities to monitor vehicle movement, track compliance, and respond swiftly to any violations or emergencies.

The guidelines also focus on passenger safety and service quality. Operators are required to maintain proper documentation, ensure vehicle fitness, and provide safe and comfortable travel conditions. Any deviation from prescribed norms will attract strict penalties.

In terms of enforcement, the department has emphasized regular inspections and stricter monitoring mechanisms. Vehicles found violating permit conditions, overloading passengers, or bypassing safety protocols will face action under applicable motor vehicle laws.

The new rules also highlight the importance of accountability among vehicle owners. Proper maintenance of vehicles, adherence to route permits, and compliance with all regulatory requirements have been made mandatory.

Transport Commissioner Yogeesha stated that these measures are part of a broader effort to streamline tourist transport operations across the state, reduce accidents, and improve passenger safety. He added that strict enforcement will ensure better discipline in the sector.

Authorities have also warned that failure to comply with the updated guidelines could lead to penalties, suspension, or cancellation of permits.

The Transport Department has urged all stakeholders, including vehicle owners and operators, to strictly follow the new norms to ensure safe, efficient, and regulated tourist transport services across Karnataka.
