Bengaluru: In a major development in a disproportionate assets case, a Bengaluru court has convicted V. Muniyappa, former Managing Director of the Karnataka Council for Technical Upgradation, Basava Bhavan, and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a hefty fine.

According to a press note issued by the Karnataka Lokayukta, the case was originally registered in 2014 after it was found that Muniyappa had amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. A detailed investigation revealed assets worth ₹3.31 crore, accounting for 77.78% more than his legitimate earnings.

Following the investigation, a charge sheet was filed under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the case was taken up for trial in a special court in Bengaluru.

The 23rd Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge (Special Court for P.C. Act cases), Sri Radhakrishna K.M., delivered the verdict on March 28, 2026. The court convicted Muniyappa under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment.

In addition, the court imposed a fine of ₹4.5 crore. In case of default in payment of the fine, the accused will have to undergo an additional six months of simple imprisonment.

The prosecution was led by Public Prosecutor Manjunath Honnaiah Naik, who successfully argued the case before the court.

The conviction marks a significant step in the Lokayukta’s continued crackdown on corruption and disproportionate asset cases in Karnataka.
