Bengaluru, February 7: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has prepared ward-level Climate Action Plans for five selected wards across the city, marking a shift towards localised climate governance, Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao said on Friday.
The selected wards are Shanthinagar, Jakkur, Begur, Vijinapura, and Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar Ward (Vijayanagar), representing Bengaluru’s Central, North, South, East, and West municipal corporations respectively.
Speaking at a review meeting held at the GBA headquarters, Maheshwar Rao said ward-level planning allows authorities to identify local climate risks more accurately and implement targeted, data-driven solutions rather than adopting one-size-fits-all approaches.
“These Climate Action Plans examine ward-specific issues across sectors such as energy and buildings, transport, solid waste management, urban planning, green cover and biodiversity, water and stormwater management, and disaster preparedness,” he said.
The plans have been developed under the GBA’s Climate Action Cell with support from multiple working groups and technical partners. Officials said the initiative enables micro-level climate interventions that align with Bengaluru’s broader sustainability goals.

Based on the outcomes and learnings from these five wards, Climate Action Plans will be expanded to other wards across the city in a phased manner, officials said.
Maheshwar Rao also directed the formation of a Technical Cell to provide scientific analysis, data-backed planning support, and implementation monitoring for climate-related projects. An IEC (Information, Education and Communication) Cell will also be created to raise public awareness and encourage citizen participation at the ward level.
To further engage citizens, GBA plans to launch a Climate Action Podcast featuring experts, practitioners, and community stakeholders to discuss climate resilience and sustainable urban development.
The meeting was attended by Special Commissioner Dr. K. Harish Kumar, FECC Special Commissioner Ramachandran R, South Municipal Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh, Development Commissioner Naveen Kumar Raju, Chief Engineers Basavaraj Kabade, Swayamprabha, Vijay Kumar Haridas, Lokesh, Krishnamurthy, Executive Engineer Nithya J, officials of the Horticulture Department and representatives of WRI, Well Labs, Sensing Local, Janasahas, Socrates, Hajirudal and CSTEP.
Senior officials from city corporations, engineering departments, horticulture divisions, and representatives from research and civil society organisations were present during the meeting.
