Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Monday said the state government is aggressively expanding the Metro network to tackle traffic congestion, announcing that Bengaluru will have a 175-kilometre operational Metro network by December 2027.

Addressing a press conference after reviewing Metro projects at the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) headquarters, Shivakumar said Metro expansion remains a key priority for the government.

Current Status & Recent Additions

Shivakumar noted that 96 km of Metro lines are currently operational in the city. After the present government came to power, the Yellow Line was commissioned, adding 24 km of Metro connectivity.

“Around one lakh commuters are using the Yellow Line daily, and traffic police have reported a nearly 30% reduction in congestion along this corridor,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Monday said the state government is aggressively expanding the Metro network to tackle traffic congestion, announcing that Bengaluru will have a 175-kilometre operational Metro network by December 2027.

What’s Coming Next

Outlining the roadmap ahead, the Deputy CM said:

  • 41 km of Metro lines will become operational in 2026
  • 38 km, including the Kempegowda International Airport line, will be commissioned by December 2027

“With this, Bengaluru’s Metro network will reach 175 km,” he said.

He added that Metro expansion plans are also being pursued towards Tavarekere via Magadi Road, Hoskote, Bidadi, and Nelamangala, with DPRs currently under preparation for some stretches.

Phase-3 Metro: Tenders in January

Shivakumar announced that tenders for nearly 100 km of Metro lines under Phase-3 will be invited in January, including major elevated and double-decker corridors.

“Phase-3 works are aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving commuter convenience. We have instructed officials to speed up execution,” he said.

He also said that additional land will be acquired near Metro stations to enable commercial development and parking facilities, enhancing revenue generation and commuter amenities.

Project Cost & Funding

Providing financial details, Shivakumar said:

  • Total Phase-3 project cost: ₹25,311 crore
  • JICA loan: ₹15,600 crore
  • Elevated corridor (double-decker) component: ₹9,700 crore (tenders to be floated in January)

Double-Decker Corridors Across Phase-3

Responding to questions on whether Phase-3 would entirely consist of elevated corridors, Shivakumar clarified that all Phase-3 routes will be built as elevated double-decker corridors.

“We are finalising land for a Metro station near Tavarekere. Since traffic from Hassan also converges here, we have decided to implement a double-decker corridor on this stretch as well,” he explained.

The Deputy CM said further decisions on tunnel road tenders would be taken only after receiving official reports and approvals.
