CM toes ‘hard line’ of all 8 Bengaluru in-charge ministers
BENGALURU:
On the basis of the recommendation of all 8 Bengaluru in-charge ministers to impose a week’s lockdown in Bengaluru, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has announced a 7-day lockdown with effect from Tuesday, July 14.
On Sunday, several ministers, including Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C N Ashwath Narayan, Food and Civil Supplies Minister K Gopalaiah and even Revenue Minister R Ashoka, were reported to have supported another phase of lockdown for Bengaluru city. The state capital has seen a huge surge in the number of positive cases in the last 10 days.
The Chief Minister’s office released the following statement: “Bengaluru City and Bengaluru Rura,total lockdown for a week. Starting from 8 pm on 14th July till 5 pm of 22rd July.”
One of two tweets by the CM at 8.27pm said: “Considering the suggestions from experts to curb the increasing number of Covid cases, Government has decided to implement complete lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Rural Districts for 7 days starting 8 PM on Tuesday, 14th July. Detailed guidelines will be released on Monday.”
“All essential services including supply of milk, vegetables, fruits, medicines and groceries will continue uninterrupted. I appeal to people to cooperate with the government, follow all guidelines, take all precautionary steps and help us contain the pandemic,” he said in the second tweet.

Just a few hours earlier, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar, replying to a query, had said that a decision on a lockdown in Bengaluru would be taken by the CM on the basis of the recommendation for strict measures made by all the eight ministers in charge of the city’s 8 zones.
The ministers in-charge of Bengaluru’s 8 zones are: Deputy Chief Minister Ashwath Narayan (West Zone), R Ashoka (South Zone), Suresh Kumar (Bommanahalli Zone), V Somanna (East Zone), S T Somashekar (RR Nagar Zone) Byrathi Basavaraj (Mahadevapura Zone), K Gopalaiah (Dasarahalli Zone) and the CM’s political secretary S R Vishwanath (Yelahanka Zone).
Bengaluru’s zonal structure is: East Zone 44 wards, West Zone 44 wards, South Zone 44 wards, Mahadevapura Zone 17 wards, Yelahanka Zone 11 wards, RR Nagar Zone 14 wards, Dasarahalli Zone 8 wards, and Bommanahalli Zone 16 wards.
