Road-digging ruled out, BBMP Joint Commissioner (South) Jagadeesh Naik feels sinkhole could be old well that was exposed
BENGALURU:
A huge, nearly 8 foot-deep sinkhole in the middle of JC Road, one of Bengaluru’s busiest roads, and close to the BBMP headquarters, created traffic havoc on Thursday.
The sinkhole appeared between two of the city’s iconic buildings, Town Hall and Ravindra Kala Kshetra. There was a huge traffic pile-up in the morning hours due to the sinkhole.
Noticed at 11 am
Onlookers said it was a mystery how the sinkhole appeared. It was first noticed around 11 am and reported to the BBMP authorities. Soon, a team of BBMP officials visited the spot and barricaded the sinkhole. Later, officials took to digging to determine the cause of the sinkhole but could not get any definite clues.

An expert said the sinkhole had formed despite the fact that no road-related or Metro work was happening on the stretch. Usually, such incidents happen when some kind of digging takes place but no civic work has been executed in the area, he added.
Speaking to TheBengaluruLive, South zone Joint Commissioner Jagadeesh Naik said, “I have visited the spot along with the engineers. I am not able to find the exact cause of the sinkhole. It might be an old well that could have been exposed. We had asked the BWSSB team to check, but they ascertained that there was no water leakage or water pipeline adjacent to the sinkhole. We have filled the sinkhole with wet mix and traffic has been normalised.”
