Bengaluru, July 4: A woman has alleged that she was sexually assaulted after being invited to a birthday party by an acquaintance in Bengaluru. The incident was reported under the jurisdiction of Talaghattapura Police Station, and police have arrested five accused in connection with the case.
According to the police, the complainant, who resides in the Yelahanka/Devanahalli area, was acquainted with a man identified as Somashekhar. The two had reportedly been in contact for some time and had spoken over the phone on several occasions.
Police said Somashekhar allegedly invited the woman to attend a birthday celebration in Talaghattapura, telling her that some of his friends had arrived from Kalaburagi and asking her to join the gathering.
On June 30, at around 5 pm, the woman travelled to the location using a Rapido bike taxi and reached the party venue at around 7 pm, where five men were present.
The woman has alleged that during the gathering, one of the accused, identified as Ambarish, sexually assaulted her.
According to the complaint, the victim managed to escape from the group and immediately contacted the police by dialling the emergency helpline. Police teams rushed to the spot and apprehended all five accused.
Speaking to the media, a senior police officer said the woman approached the police station and lodged a complaint alleging rape. Based on her statement, police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
The officer said the complainant knew Somashekhar prior to the incident. Since she could not attend his birthday earlier, he allegedly invited her to Talaghattapura to celebrate. She arrived at the location as requested, where Somashekhar was present along with his friends.
Police said the investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and the role of each accused. Statements of the victim and witnesses are being recorded, and forensic as well as other evidence is being collected.
The five accused are currently in police custody, and further legal proceedings are underway. Police have not disclosed additional details as the investigation is in progress.
