Bengaluru: Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra has demanded that the special legislature session be extended from three days to at least a week to allow a detailed discussion on drought and the Kasturirangan report concerning the Western Ghats.
According to a party press release dated September 21, Vijayendra said the issues affecting farmers and people living near forests required adequate time in the legislature. He called for a discussion that addressed both the protection of the Western Ghats and the concerns of residents in the affected areas.
Vijayendra said the BJP and JD(S) would work together in raising these issues during the session. He criticised the Congress government’s handling of drought and accused it of failing to respond adequately to farmers’ difficulties.
The BJP leader claimed that pressure generated by the parties’ 10-day Ballari Chalo campaign had compelled the government to convene the session. He also criticised Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s remarks at Thirthahalli and his aerial inspection of drought conditions.
Vijayendra maintained that three days would be insufficient for a substantive debate on the two major issues and asked the government to provide at least a week for legislators to discuss them.
