Bengaluru, March 16: In an effort to improve urban aesthetics and make better use of vacant infrastructure spaces, Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department Tushar Giri Nath has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan for beautifying and developing areas beneath flyovers across Bengaluru.

During a review meeting on urban infrastructure, officials were instructed to identify locations under flyovers constructed by the city corporations and the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) where beautification and development works could be taken up.

Giri Nath noted that many spaces beneath major flyovers remain undeveloped or poorly maintained, which negatively impacts the overall appearance of the city. Authorities have therefore been asked to compile a list of such locations and formulate a structured development plan.

Bamboo Plantation and Urban Greening

As part of the city’s urban greening initiative, departments including city corporations, BMRCL, BWSSB and BDA have been directed to undertake large-scale plantation drives and ensure proper maintenance of saplings.

BWSSB has been asked to develop a plan to plant saplings around sewage treatment plants (STPs). Officials were also instructed to plant bamboo saplings along roadsides and around lakes, which can help improve greenery and environmental sustainability.

Additionally, the Forest Department has been asked to identify suitable land parcels for establishing tree parks and submit a report outlining the estimated cost for such projects.

Solid Waste Transfer Stations

The meeting also reviewed the progress of secondary solid waste transfer stations in Bengaluru. Currently, such stations have been established in three city divisions, while construction work is ongoing at four additional locations.

Officials were directed to invite tenders and issue work orders for eight more transfer stations, while efforts are underway to identify land for the remaining sites. In cases where government land is required, the District Collector has been instructed to ensure immediate transfer of the land.

Focus on Urban Sustainability

Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao emphasized the need to prioritize urban greening and sustainable infrastructure. He directed departments to plant a large number of saplings during the current year and ensure their long-term maintenance.

In areas where sufficient land is unavailable for constructing large waste transfer stations, officials have been advised to establish mini transfer stations to support efficient waste management.

The proposed initiatives aim to transform underutilized urban spaces into functional, greener and aesthetically appealing public areas, contributing to improved city infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
