Shivamogga, Karnataka: A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided on Sunday when a passenger launch ferry operating in the Sharavathi backwaters near HoLebagilu in Sagar taluk came to an abrupt halt due to a technical failure.
The Sigandur launch, carrying several passengers, developed a mechanical snag mid-journey, leading to brief panic and anxiety among the commuters. According to eyewitnesses, the launch began drifting aimlessly in the backwaters, raising fears of a serious accident.
Initial reports indicate that the vessel experienced steering and engine malfunctions, resulting in a temporary loss of control. The situation was tense as the ferry veered off course and floated with the wind and water currents, leaving passengers visibly shaken.
“People were scared and confused. Some even feared capsizing,” said a local source who witnessed the chaos unfold.
However, thanks to timely efforts by the crew and local authorities, the technical issue was resolved, and the launch was stabilized. All passengers were brought back to safety without injury. Officials have confirmed that a major mishap was averted by sheer luck.
Authorities have assured that the vessel has been temporarily suspended for inspection and repairs, and measures are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
