Stringent Measures For Defaulters As BBMP Chases Down Tax Arrears

Date:

BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is currently considering the attachment of movable assets belonging to major property tax defaulters in an effort to recover outstanding dues. The BBMP has identified approximately 20,000 individuals with significant tax liabilities and is taking steps to address the issue.

Previously, the civic body had introduced a one-time settlement plan, but it did not receive a substantial response. As a result, the BBMP has decided to pursue the attachment of movable properties owned by defaulters. Under the one-time settlement scheme, defaulters had the option to settle their dues by paying 50% of the total amount owed. The deadline for this settlement is July 31, however, the BBMP is now focusing on major defaulters.

Palike Special Commissioner Munish Moudgil has stated that the initial focus will be on sealing commercial properties with outstanding tax payments. There are approximately 16,000-20,000 defaulters, and a significant number of individuals have yet to pay their property taxes. The BBMP is also considering the attachment of movable assets belonging to major defaulters. The deadline for availing rebates on property tax has been extended.

Within the eight BBMP zones, there are 400 property tax defaulters, with 50 major defaulters identified by the civic body. Despite receiving notices, these major defaulters have failed to settle their dues. Among them, 136 individuals owe more than Rs 1 crore, with some having dues ranging from Rs 8 crore to Rs 15 crore. Consequently, the BBMP is now planning to pursue the attachment of movable assets owned by these defaulters.
