Bengaluru: The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, a prominent pro-Kannada organization, filed a police complaint against actor Kamal Haasan on Wednesday. The complaint stems from remarks made by Haasan during the audio launch of his upcoming film, Thug Life, in Chennai, where he controversially stated that “Tamil gave birth to Kannada.”
Led by Praveen Shetty, the organization submitted the complaint at the R.T. Nagar police station, calling for legal action against the actor.
In their complaint, the organization asserted that Haasan’s “controversial statement” has not only offended the sentiments of Kannadigas but has also fostered animosity between the Kannada and Tamil communities, thereby insulting the pride of Kannadigas.
“With each new Tamil film release, there have been continuous affronts to the self-respect of Kannadigas. Such statements have repeatedly disrupted the peace and harmony between our communities,” the complaint further stated.
A senior police officer confirmed, “We have received the complaint; however, no FIR has been registered yet. We are currently seeking legal advice and will determine the next steps accordingly.”
Haasan’s comments have ignited widespread outrage among various pro-Kannada groups, leading to protests in multiple cities across the state, including Belagavi, Mysuru, Hubballi, and Bengaluru.
Protesters condemned the actor-politician’s remarks and demanded a public apology to the people of Karnataka. They have threatened to obstruct the screening of Thug Life in the state if he does not issue an apology.
