Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara has categorically denied any proposal to rename Tumakuru district, asserting that the region’s historical, cultural, and literary identity will be preserved at all costs.
Tumakuru/Bengaluru: Amid growing speculation over the renaming of Tumakuru district and its possible inclusion under the Bengaluru administrative region, Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara has issued a firm clarification. Speaking at the birthday event of Karnataka’s cooperative minister Rajanna, Parameshwara said, “There is no question of changing the name of Tumakuru district under any circumstances.”
Addressing media queries on whether Tumakuru could be brought under the Bengaluru ambit, the minister said his previous remarks were misinterpreted. “I had only responded to a question about whether Tumakuru could be considered part of Bengaluru South in the future. I said ‘it could be possible’, but never said we will change the name,” he clarified.
Parameshwara further emphasized the deep-rooted cultural and literary heritage of Tumakuru, referencing stalwarts like D.R. Bendre, Doddarangegowda, and Bellavi Narahari Shastri. “Tumakuru has a rich legacy — its own history, culture, and contributions to Kannada literature. This name carries significance, and no development plan warrants its renaming,” he asserted.
This statement comes in response to concerns voiced by local residents and cultural icons who feared that urban expansion plans might overshadow the district’s distinct identity.
