No Notice Served on Bharat Ratna C.N.R. Rao Over Malleswaram Voter Name Mismatch; AERO Approved Final Roll Entry on Sept 8
Bengaluru, September 9: Bengaluru election authorities have clarified that Bharat Ratna Professor C.N.R. Rao and his family were not served any notice during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Malleswaram despite a mismatch between his name in the 2002 voter list and the current draft roll, and said his record was approved on September 8 for inclusion in the final electoral roll.
District Election Officer and Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao issued the clarification after reports appeared in sections of the media stating that Rao had been served a notice over the name mismatch.
According to the clarification and the press note issued by the Additional District Election Officer, BBMP North, Rao is a voter in Part No. 59 of the 157-Malleswaram Assembly Constituency in the current draft voter list. The press note states that his name appears in the current draft roll as “Proff C.N.R. Rao S/O Nagesh Rav. H”, whereas the 2002 voter list carried the entry “Rama S/O H. Nagesh”.
The media clarification said Rao was a voter at serial number 431 in Part No. 129 of the then 76-Malleswaram Assembly Constituency in the 2002 electoral roll, where his name had been entered as “Rama”. In the current 157-Malleswaram Assembly Constituency, he is registered at serial number 187 in Part No. 59 under the name “Professor C.N. Rao M”, and his name has also been included in the draft electoral roll.
As part of the SIR process, enumeration forms were taken to Rao’s residence and respectfully handed over to him. The BBMP North press note states that the State SVEEP Nodal Officer, Commissioner of Bengaluru West City Corporation, Electoral Registration Officer for Malleswaram and the Booth Level Officer of Part No. 59 were involved in delivering the enumeration form at his residence.
The required information was subsequently filled in as part of the revision exercise.
Election authorities said that although there was a difference in the name recorded in the earlier and current electoral rolls, no notice was issued either to Rao or to members of his family.
The BBMP North clarification said that, considering Rao’s stature and contribution, the Booth Level Officer did not serve a notice and instead recommended his record for final approval to the Additional Electoral Registration Officer appointed for the purpose.
The AERO approved the record on September 8, 2026, for addition to the final electoral roll, according to the press note.
Maheshwar Rao said that in connection with the inquiry process under the Special Intensive Revision, the BLO had recommended inclusion of Rao’s name in the final electoral roll without issuing a notice, and the necessary steps were being taken for his name to be included in the final roll.
The Additional District Election Officer, BBMP North, specifically disputed a media report carrying the claim that Rao had been served a notice over the name mismatch, describing it as factually incorrect.
The press note reiterated that no notice had been served either on Professor C.N.R. Rao or on his family members.
The BBMP North press note also listed supporting material including an extract of the 2002 voter list, a BLO video, a photograph of the enumeration form being delivered and a statement of the Electoral Registration Officer.
