In absence of an elected Council, BBMP Administrator Rakesh Singh is yet to decide on a date after getting the budget cleared by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai

BENGALURU:

It is still uncertain when the second consecutive BBMP budget in the absence of elected representatives will be presented. As per several vernacular media, the civic budget will be presented on March 30 at 3 pm, but there’s a slim chance of that happening.

By the time this story was published on our website, no media houses had received any invitation from BBMP to the effect that the budget would be presented on March 30.

A top source confirmed that the budget will not be presented on March 30 as reported by several media houses. However, BBMP Administrator Rakesh Singh is looking for a suitable date after getting the green signal from Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is in charge of Bengaluru City.

Singh has reportedly asked BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta and Special Commissioner (Finance) Thulasi Maddineni to attend the meeting in his chamber to take a relook at the budget prepared by the finance wing, as several BJP MLAs have expressed unhappiness over the allocation of funds to their respective assembly constituencies.

“No date has been fixed to present the BBMP budget. The media will be invited after a suitable date is finalised,” said a top source to TheBengaluruLive.

Budget to cross Rs 10,000 crore

As per the Fiscal Responsibility Act, BBMP, based on the previous year’s actual income, cannot overestimate the budget and needs to get it approved by the government.

In simple words, for FY 2022-23, BBMP can present a budget exceeding not more than 10 per cent of the previous year’s income. That is, last year (fiscal 21-22) the state government had approved a civic budget of around Rs 9,800 crore, and with BBMP allowed to add up to 10 per cent more, the new budget could cross Rs 10,000 crore.
