Naval chopper was used for rescue mission

BENGALURU:

Several hours after being adrift at sea in the wake of Cyclone Tauktae, 9 crew members of Tug Coromandel were rescued by Coast guard and Naval officers.

A Naval helicopter was used on Monday morning after a respite in weather conditions.

As per Naval Commander SB Venkatesh, the Naval helicopter rescued all nine of them near the Kapu lighthouse.

He said, “The tug was stuck 5 nautical miles away in the rocks bear the Kapu lighthouse.”

All the nine were stranded since Saturday. “A tugboat (Coromandel) of Mangalore Refineries was stranded between rocks with 9 people off Udupi coast. The sea has been rough & the coast guard vessel hasn’t managed to rescue them on Saturday and Sunday. The INS Varaha spotted the tugboat on Saturday night,” said an official.

Following the successful rescue mission, the Indian Coast Guard tweeted: “#CycloneTauktae In a coordinated operation by @IndiaCoastGuard & @IndianNavy all the 9 crew of Tug Coromandal supporter IX grounded off Mulki rocks #Karnataka were saved. While 5 crew were rescued by #ICG ship Varaha Gemini boat, 4 were airlifted by IN ALH.”
