NHAI officer, nabbed by CBI, allegedly demanded bribe for Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway project

Countrywide raids by CBI lead to seizure of Rs 4 crore, including Rs 4 lakh from Bengaluru NHAI officer’s house

BENGALURU:

The CBI on Friday arrested the regional Officer, NHAI, Bengaluru for allegedly demanding/accepting illegal gratification from NHAI contractors for clearing their pending bills and for issuing a Provisional Commercial Operations Date (PCOD) for completed projects. It was further alleged that the officer, Akil Ahmad, had demanded illegal gratification from the General Manager of a private company with its head office at Bhopal and its site office in Benguluru, with respect to a project under the Benguluru- Chennai Expressway Packages 1 and 2.

It was also alleged that Rs 20 lakh was to be delivered to a person at New Delhi for the NHAI Regional Officer. The CBI laid a trap and the person and an official of the company were caught. The amount of Rs 20 lakh recovered from the person at New Delhi was allegedly received on behalf of the NHAI officer.

Others accused

Apart from NHAI officer Ahmad, the arrested accused, who will be produced before the competent court, are Retnakaran Sajilal, General Manager, Dilip Buildcon Pvt Ltd, Devendra Jain, Executive Director, Buildcon, Sunil Kumar Verma, an official with Buildcon, and Anuj Gupta.

Searches are being conducted at the premises of the accused at New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi, Gurugram and Bhopal. Cash of Rs 4 crore from the premises of private persons and cash of Rs 4 lakh from the premises of the Regional Officer of NHAI were recovered.
