New property tax collection under BBMP: DK Shivakumar

BENGALURU:

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed his unhappiness over the current property tax system under the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Currently only 3 thousand crores tax is being collected. Therefore, we are thinking about bringing new tax collection.

When asked about the tax recommendations in the report given by Mohan Das Pai’s, the Deputy Chief Minister told reporters: “We are not satisfied with the current tax system. Now only 3 thousand crores tax is being collected. Therefore, we are thinking about tax collection,” he said.

“I have written a letter to the government offices, asking central government offices to pay tax. HAL has paid 93 crore tax. I have also directed state government offices like KEB, KPTCL to pay property tax. Let’s collect tax from the government first,” he said.

When asked what is the alternative if self-declared tax is not working properly, he said, “It is not effective than not working properly. They claim 2 lakh sqft if there is 3 lakh sqft in Vidhana Soudha itself. In the buildings built for commercial purpose, only residential tax is paid and no business tax is paid. So we thought that every house should be calculated. We have decided to change the officers in this matter,” he said.
