BENGALURU: A 19-year-old student, hailing from Delhi, died after he jumped on the Metro tracks in front of an oncoming train at Attiguppe station today afternoon. The deceased was identified as Dhurva, a first-year law student.
Due to the incident, Metro services between Challaghatta and Majestic were affected for some time and passengers were requested to take other modes of transport. The services on the purple line were available only between Whitefield and Magadi Road during that time and were resumed later.
The police were immediately informed and the youth was shifted to Victorial Hospital, but did not survive. Metro MD Maheshwar Rao confirmed to Public TV that Dhruva had jumped on the track in an attempt to commit suicide. Deputy Commissioner of Police Girish S said Dhruva was a first-year law student and that the body had been decapitated.
Passengers were requested to opt for other modes of transport. The BMTC deployed more buses at Magadi Road station after the incident.
The body was dragged for some distance and was removed after the Metro train was stopped. After the body was removed from the tracks, Metro operations were restored completely on the purple line. The police have informed the youth’s parents in Delhi and also the college authorities.
On January 5, a youth hailing from Kerala had jumped on the track even as a train was approaching, at Jalahalli Metro station. Following this, BMRCL authorities had considered installing gates and creating safety zones apart from deploying additional personnel. So far, steel gates have been installed only at the Majestic Metro station.
