Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday announced that families displaced during the Kogilu encroachment clearance drive will be provided alternative housing at Baiyappanahalli, located within a 7-kilometre radius of Kogilu. He also issued a stern warning to revenue and civic officials, stating that any future illegal encroachments on government land would invite strict action against responsible officers.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said that around 167 illegal sheds constructed on government land at Kogilu were demolished on December 20, following due notice to occupants. “Despite being informed that the land belonged to the government, the encroachers did not vacate. Hence, the clearance was carried out,” he said.

Siddaramaiah revealed that 15 acres of land had been handed over to the BBMP for waste-processing purposes, and that the site also housed a quarry. He noted that illegal occupation had continued since 2020–21, indicating serious lapses by local revenue and municipal officials. “Such encroachments cannot happen without the knowledge of tahsildars and revenue inspectors. I have directed action against erring officials,” he said.

Alternative Housing Plan

As a humanitarian measure, the government has decided to provide alternative housing to eligible displaced families. Officials have been instructed to complete verification within two days, following which allotments will be made at Survey No. 23, Baiyappanahalli, where 1,087 multi-storey flats are available.

Each house costs approximately ₹11.20 lakh. The Chief Minister explained that beneficiaries would receive state and central government subsidies, along with ₹5 lakh assistance from the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).

  • General category beneficiaries will receive subsidies amounting to ₹8.70 lakh, with the remaining ₹2.5 lakh as a loan.
  • SC/ST beneficiaries will receive ₹9.50 lakh in subsidies, with only ₹1.70 lakh as loan assistance.

Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan has assured support in facilitating loan verification, Siddaramaiah said.

Homes by New Year

Verification will be completed over the next two days, and houses will be handed over on January 1, marking the New Year with rehabilitation for the displaced families. The Chief Minister has entrusted Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan with ensuring timely allotment.

“This decision is driven purely by humanitarian considerations. However, this relief applies only to this specific case. Any future illegal constructions will not be tolerated,” Siddaramaiah warned, reiterating that officials permitting illegal encroachments will be held personally accountable.

He added that the issue had also been discussed with AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, assuring that the government remains committed to balancing legality with compassion.
