Karnataka Seeks Supreme Court Extension for Greater Bengaluru Authority Elections Till December 31; Political Row Intensifies
Bengaluru, July 10: The Karnataka Government has approached the Supreme Court seeking an extension of the deadline to conduct the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections, requesting that the timeline be extended from August 31, 2026, to December 31, 2026. The move has triggered a fresh political debate, with both the ruling Congress and the Opposition presenting contrasting views on the proposed delay.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the State Government to complete the GBA elections by August 31, 2026, following repeated delays in conducting civic polls in Bengaluru.
According to the State Government’s affidavit before the apex court, additional time is required as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is currently underway and administrative preparations for the elections are yet to be completed.
How the Delay Began
The issue dates back to the implementation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Act, after which the process of replacing the erstwhile BBMP structure and reorganising Bengaluru’s civic administration began.
The exercise involved the proposed division of the city into five municipal corporations, besides ward delimitation, reservation of wards and revision of electoral rolls. These processes resulted in repeated postponement of the civic elections.
Following petitions challenging the delay, the Supreme Court fixed August 31, 2026, as the deadline for completing the elections.
Government Seeks More Time
The Karnataka Government has now informed the Supreme Court that the ongoing voter list revision and administrative preparations make it difficult to complete the election process within the existing deadline.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar indicated that preparations were being reviewed but said the matter primarily rests with the authorities handling the election process.
“There are some practical issues. We are making our political preparations for the elections, but administrative matters are being handled by the concerned authorities,” Shivakumar said.
Congress Says Party Ready for Polls
KPCC President B.K. Hariprasad said the Congress is fully prepared for the GBA elections, claiming that the party has already constituted committees and begun work on its manifesto.
According to Hariprasad, the delay is linked to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which is facing manpower constraints.
He said government officials are currently engaged in the voter verification exercise and argued that the process requires trained government staff rather than Home Guards.
BJP Alleges Deliberate Delay
Karnataka BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra criticised the government’s move, alleging that the ruling Congress is using the Special Intensive Revision process as a pretext to postpone elections.
He claimed the State Government was not in a position to conduct elections to the GBA, Zilla Panchayats or Gram Panchayats and alleged that the delay was politically motivated.
Vijayendra said postponing the elections under the guise of voter list revision was “unfortunate” and accused the government of avoiding elections due to political considerations.
Supreme Court’s Decision Crucial
The State Government’s request is now before the Supreme Court, which will decide whether to extend the election deadline till December 31 or retain its earlier direction to complete the polls by August 31, 2026.
The Court’s decision is expected to have significant implications for Bengaluru’s civic governance and the implementation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority framework.
The State Government has cited administrative preparedness and electoral roll revision as the basis for seeking an extension. The Opposition has questioned the move, while the final decision now rests with the Supreme Court.
