Bengaluru: A 63-year-old man who tested positive for Covid-19 has passed away at a private hospital in Mysuru, bringing the total number of coronavirus-related fatalities in Karnataka to three, officials reported on Friday.
The patient was admitted to the hospital on May 15 and succumbed to his illness on May 25. According to a statement from the health department, the cause of death was septic shock accompanied by Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) with oliguria, Covid pneumonia with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), and Hyponatremia.
The deceased had underlying health conditions, including Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Bronchiectasis, which contributed to his severe condition.
As of May 30, the health department reported 234 active Covid-19 cases in Karnataka, with 114 new cases identified on Friday. On that day, a total of 460 Covid-19 tests were conducted, comprising 406 RT-PCR tests and 54 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT). The positivity rate for Friday was recorded at 24.7%, while the fatality rate stood at 0.8%.
The health department emphasized the importance of testing for Covid-19 in all Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases and recommended testing in only 5% of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases. Throat swab samples should be submitted to designated laboratories for RT-PCR testing to confirm any coronavirus infections.
Furthermore, the department advised that all tests should be conducted in government laboratories, and available Covid-19 test kits should be utilized on a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) basis to prevent wastage of resources.
