Only 50% attendance allowed, face shields for teachers above 50: Karnataka Chief Secy’s order

After a long 19 months, the Karnataka government has announced that primary schools will reopen from October 25.
Primary schools have remained shut in the state ever since the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak was reported in March 2020.
Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar, in an order issued on Monday, has announced the reopening of these classes from October 25. “Classes from 1st to 5th standards permitted to reopen from October 25, 2021, strictly adhering to Covid-19 Appropriate Behaviour and SOPs issued by the Department of Primary and Secondary Education,” Kumar says in his order.
Parental consent
The Chief Secretary’s order goes on to say that a parental consent letter for physical classes is mandatory. The requirements mentioned in the order are: “Screening for Covid-19 symptoms on entry, 50% of the capacity in a classroom, provision of hand sanitisers, physical distancing of a minimum of one metre (and) no crowding, particularly at the school entry and exit.”
Daily disinfection
“Classrooms and restrooms will be disinfected daily using 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. Only teachers and staff who have been vaccinated with two doses of Covid-19 vaccine will be allowed in classes 1 to 5. There shall be additional use of face shields by teachers who are over 50 years of age. The operational guidelines on re-opening of classes 1 to 5 will be issued by the Department of Primary and Secondary Education,” Kumar’s order maintains.
