Bengaluru: In a major healthcare policy move, the Government of Karnataka has approved the inclusion of Root Canal Treatment (RCT) procedures under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana–Chief Minister’s Arogya Karnataka (AB PMJAY–CM’s ArK) scheme. The decision aims to improve access to affordable dental care and promote tooth preservation among beneficiaries.

The government order (HFW 124 CGE 2026), dated April 8, 2026, allows the inclusion of RCT procedures for both PHH and NPHH beneficiaries under the scheme, with a cap of 50,000 cases or ₹5 crore, whichever is lower.

Root Canal Treatment is a critical dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation of the pulp inside the tooth. It involves cleaning, disinfecting, and sealing the root canal system to prevent further infection. Experts note that failure to undergo RCT can lead to severe complications, including dental abscess and eventual tooth loss. By preserving natural teeth, the procedure also helps maintain proper chewing function and reduces the need for costly alternatives such as implants or bridges.

Currently, the AB PMJAY–CM’s ArK scheme includes 12 procedure codes under Dental and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. However, RCT procedures were not part of the existing package. Studies indicated that many patients opted for tooth extraction due to high RCT costs and lack of awareness. The inclusion is expected to significantly reduce unnecessary extractions and improve oral health outcomes across the state.

The proposal for inclusion was submitted by the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST), which analysed treatment costs based on CGHS rates and prevailing prices in government and private hospitals. Based on this evaluation, the government has approved CGHS Tier-3 (non-NABH) rates—₹1,360 for anterior teeth and ₹2,040 for posterior teeth.

Under the revised framework, RCT procedures will be classified as Complex Secondary Procedures (2B) within the scheme. The package cost will include all consumables and procedure-related expenses, ensuring no additional financial burden on beneficiaries.

The Health and Family Welfare Department issued the order under powers delegated through a previous government directive dated August 12, 2025, reaffirming its commitment to expanding universal health coverage and strengthening public healthcare delivery in Karnataka.
