• The MOU shall cover various Power Projects, Hydro, Solar (Floating and Ground mounting) and Pumped Storage Projects.

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, Govt of Karnataka enterprise and Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCL), a Central Govt Generating company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to take up accelerated development of various Power Projects that including Hydro, Solar (Floating and Ground mounting) and Pumped Storage Projects worth 15,000 crores today.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical) from Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCL), and Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary, Ministry of Energy, Government of Karnataka.
“Today, on behalf of the Energy Ministry (GOK) with THDCL Central Govt Generating company, we have signed an MOU estimating 15,000 crores. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) encompasses the development of a 100 MW Floating Solar PV Plant at the Kadra Dam reservoir, the Establishment of 170 MW of Ground mounted, rooftop Solar PV Plant in the premises of KPCL Plants and the Establishment of 1500 MW of Pumped Storage Plant at Varahi,” Energy Minister K J George said today.
Me and Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Ministry, discussed this Memorandum of Understanding MOU with Central Power Minister RK Singh and CMD of THDCL. Unfortunately, R. K. Vishnoi CMD, Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCL), is unwell and unable to present at the MOU signing today. This is an excellent opportunity for the state, and we will begin work with Central Govt on a priority basis. The central government has assured that the power generated under this MOU will prioritize the Karnataka state govt. We also need power to address the state’s rising demands. Therefore, we will work towards executing this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the earliest. This is a flagship scheme and benefits the state immensely, the Energy Minister added.
“Signing this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a major step. The government of Karnataka, through its two undertakings, Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCCL) and Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd (KREDL), have entered into an MOU with Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCL), a Central Govt Generating company, which has experience working in renewable space and Hydro and Pump Hydro space to take up several power generation projects in the state of Karnataka,” Gaurav Gupta I.A.S, Additional Chief Secretary to the Ministry of Energy, Government of Karnataka.
These projects, if finalized and when finalized, will lead to an investment of more than 15000 crores in Karnataka by the THDC at mutually agreed terms and conditions. Right now, the task is to prepare the Details Project Reports (DPRs) tak,e up the feasibility study, and get approvals, and for that, THDC has assured immediate steps will be taken, Gaurav Gupta added.
In addition to the above MOU, THDCIL can self-identify Solar and Pumped Storage projects in Karnataka and approach KPCL to allot these projects through the Government of Karnataka. KPCL will facilitate THDCIL for the same.

Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd (KREDL), Govt of Karnataka enterprise and Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCL), a Central government company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of Renewable Energy Projects, including Pumped Storage Projects in Karnataka today.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) encompasses the development of a 1GW Hybrid Project, 500MW Bidar Solar Park, by Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCL).
In addition to the above, THDCIL can self-identify Solar and any other RE projects in Karnataka and approach KREDL to allot these projects through the Government of Karnataka as per RE Policy 2022-27. KREDL will facilitate THDCIL for the same.

Varahi Hydro Power Project is a run-off river project located on the Varahi River near Hosangadi in the Udupi district of Karnataka in India. The project’s purpose is to divert the water for electricity generation. Varahi is Karnataka’s first underground powerhouse. The installed capacity of the underground powerhouse is 460 MW, having four units of 115 MW each.
