Bengaluru: A senior Janata Dal (Secular) leader was arrested after allegedly assaulting an on-duty traffic police constable at Gottigere Junction in Bengaluru, police said.
The accused, identified as 65-year-old Manjunath C., popularly known as Gottigere Manjanna, was taken into custody in the early hours near Meenakshi Mall on Bannerghatta Road.
According to police, the incident took place around 3 pm on Sunday, August 16, within the limits of Hulimavu Police Station. Arun Manjappa Badagoudra, a constable attached to Hulimavu Traffic Police, was regulating traffic when Manjunath allegedly confronted him and abused him.
Police alleged that Manjunath then assaulted the constable by headbutting him and punching him in the face. The constable suffered bleeding injuries to his face, while the incident also obstructed him from carrying out his official duties.
Based on a complaint filed by the injured constable, Hulimavu Police registered a criminal case. A special police team subsequently traced and arrested the JD(S) functionary.
